About Us

Hello and welcome to Antenatal Online. Our online, video based antenatal classes were launched in 2011 as a result of my experience of having my first baby. While pregnant I was terrified about the birth and managed to put the end bit out of my mind for quite a while. When I finally accepted the fact that the baby was actually going to come out,  I decided I needed information, and lots of it.

Unfortunately free NHS antenatal classes in my area of Kent had been cut down to one 2 hour information evening. It seemed that my options were to find a private antenatal class or go without. My anxiety levels were too high for the latter and so I signed up for a private Hypnobirthing course and a private antenatal class  – over the top I know (not to mention expensive) but as a result I went from fully intending to embrace all available pharmaceuticals to being convinced that I wanted a natural birth. In the end I had a planned home birth, and Evie was born in a birth pool in my living room.

Given the reality of NHS cuts and expensive private classes, it can be difficult to access good quality and affordable antenatal classes but I would argue that it is really important to prepare yourself for your labour. There is a lot of fear and anxiety surrounding birth in our culture - I know, I felt it! Some women like to regale the unsuspecting first time mum-to-be with a birth horror story or two and if you manage to avoid them, there is always a soap opera birth to fill you with dread. We don't really see much positivity around what is actually one of the most natural things in the world. Add to this the fact that, in this country, birth often ends in medical intervention, with c-section rates at an all time high, it's no wonder that many mums-to-be don't relish the thought of their labour.

Some would argue however that for the majority of women it doesn’t have to be like that. I am lucky enough to have met two brilliant, passionate and committed midwives who have helped  put together Antenatal Online. Gill Perks and Jo Killlingley, who both have many years experience offering antenatal education in the NHS and privately, believe that if you understand the process of labour and how your body works during childbirth, you are more likely to have a positive birth experience.

I know from experience that being prepared and well informed, knowing what to expect and what your birth options are can really help you have a great birth experience and this is ultimately why I developed Antenatal Online. I wanted to provide more choice for parents-to-be to make sure that everyone, regardless of where they live, has access to high quality and affordable antenatal classes.

I hope you find the site useful and good luck with your new arrivals! If you fancy a chat or have any questions, drop me an email at louise@antenatalonline.co.uk
